Common questions about the chemistry tools

How do I calculate the molar mass of a compound?

Type the formula the way it is written in chemistry, with capitalised element symbols and numeric subscripts: H2O, CaCO3, Ca(OH)2. The calculator reads the symbols, multiplies each standard atomic weight by its count, adds them and reports the total in grams per mole along with the contribution of each element.

Why does my formula come back as an error?

Element symbols start with a capital letter and any second letter is lower case, so CO is carbon monoxide and Co is cobalt. A lower-case first letter, a bracket that is never closed, or a symbol that is not an element are all reported with the position of the problem rather than a wrong answer.

What does the temperature explorer show?

Move the temperature slider and each element is coloured by the state it is in at that temperature, from its published melting and boiling points. Elements with no published boundary are shown as unknown rather than assumed to stay in their room-temperature state.

Does any of this leave my browser?

No. The element data ships with the page and every calculation runs locally, so the tools work offline and nothing you type is uploaded.
